For all my work smarts, I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to the personal aspects. Like how to treat scraped knees.

Took a bad tumble a couple of days ago when my heel went into a hole on the gravelled road. The wounds were nasty. And what did I do? Washed the wounds and plastered band-aids over them.

BIG MISTAKE. The only thing that I got right was to wash the wounds. Plasters? Big fat no. Apparently, I am supposed to keep them dry. It didn't occur to me until I got frustrated with the wounds oozing clear pus from time to time. What on earth? Oh, maybe I'm supposed to keep them dry.

Checked with Do, and yes, that is what I am supposed to do. And so it is what I am doing now while testing the natural healing capabilities of a 30-plus body.

The feeling is indescribable. As I opened the door to see a clean and neat apartment an hour ago, the relief and happiness that overcame me was immense. I had forgotten that D, my part-time cleaner, has finally returned to Macau and came by to clean my apartment this morning. She is such a good, responsible and initiative housekeeper that I am absolutely lost without her.

Boss brought me, kicking and screaming literally in the weeks following up, on this official delegation thing to Nanning in Guangxi for the China-ASEAN Exposition. It's one of those things that we must do to assimilate into the local business community. Nanning. Guangxi. A weekend of greasy food and being on good behaviour. It didn't sound good.

To be fair, trip started on a pleasant enough start. Everyone was nice and friendly, and not as stuffy as I had imagined. My wails at dinner seemed to amuse them though.

Guess what the above is?

Dunno?

Well, neither did I. Looked like fish from afar. As I placed it in my mouth -- before biting down on it -- I thought I felt bone, like chicken, which was strange. So I took it out, placed it on my plate and looked up to see one of the older guys asking me in a very amused manner, "Do you know what that is?".

Of course, I replied that I don't know since it was too scaly to be chicken.

He said. SNAKE. And I freaked.

And then, he added that the soup, that we had all drank very happily because it was so yummy, was boiled with snake, the endangered pangolin and blah blah. What on earth??!?! I thought that was chicken soup. It finally dawned on us that the restaurat was done up in African style because it specializes in wild game.

The rest of dinner was a game of asking "what's this, what's that" before eating anything. That said, I still failed with rice. Thought it was a bowl of brown rice -- looked and tasted like it -- but found out that it was made with pangolin's blood after I had eaten all of it. I tuned out after that. No no, please do not tell me anymore. :|

Anyway, next day at the event, I saw real little fishes swimming around in an exhibit.

And felt like running away to a seaside holiday, thanks to all the inspiring booths all around.

And here's our Singapore booth. Which was oh so quiet. Versus Hong Kong's which had a similar concept but was much livelier.

And here's where the future Macau City/Street in Nanning is currently under construction.

This trip was bagful of mixed emotions for me. The familiarity made me a little nostalgic but that lasted only a day as the usual clueless ineffiency and pretense of a pretty facade while the rest of the population live along non-lit streets in bad conditions get to me again.

I am happy to be back in Macau.

I must have been burying my head so deep in some vacuum those years in Beijing that it took an Australian collegue to point out to me, while standing on the streets of Macau, that the names of the 5 mascots string a similar sounding welcome greeting -- 贝贝,晶晶,欢欢,迎迎,妮妮。 And that the colours are representative of the 5 elements -- 金木水火土。 Rrrrright.

I could pick it up and throw it into the dustbin. But I am so lazy and dependent on my part-time cleaner that I am just leaving it there. Actually, I just HATE housework so -- goodness knows why. Can't wait for her to back from her trip home later this week.

Participated in my first ever event in Macau -- the 12th Macao International Trade & Investment Fair.

Sounds official and important?

But it was really just an exhibition of a very odd mix of companies who have almost no relation to one another, apart from some obligation to participate.

Apart from the first day, it was mostly empty on the other days.

Or filled with aunties and uncles from goodness knows where.

And freebie enthusiasts who queue without knowing why. FYI: the kids were just playing with the Wheel of Fortune with no game-master around, ie no prizes, yet a queue forms...

How sad it is that I should get a jolt of shock from seeing the time 17:59, thinking that Sunday is almost over, not because of impending Monday blues but because it means fewer hours left for me to meet my deadlines before I have to go to the office tomorrow?

Actually, it's the first home cooked meal in Macau, thanks to mummy. Doubt I'll keep it up after she leaves next week. As usual, the pots and pans will never see the light of day while the oil, sauces and whatnot will just sit past their expiry dates.
